Education through exploration for neurodivergent young people
Tutoring and mentoring for young people both in and out of school
Who I am
My name is Martin Anthony Hill. I am autistic and dyspraxic and have ADHD. I have been caring for, tutoring and mentoring neurodivergent young people around East and West Sussex for over twenty years. I use this experience, and my own lived experience as a neurodivergent person, to help children who might otherwise struggle to access education.
What I do
I help young people explore, develop and progress their natural curiosity. Through conversation, collaboration, exploration, deep dives and patient guidance in 1-1 sessions or small groups, I use children’s existing interests to help them find joy and integrity in their education.
Special
interests, qualifications & pedagogy
My particular interests are global history, history from below, and radical history.
The support I am able to offer encompasses these subjects, as well as any area of history, politics, current affairs, and social justice.
I have a BA in History and Spanish from the University of Sussex, was a political journalist for alternative media, and have many years’ experience working with young people with special educational needs, in particular Autism Spectrum Condition, in a variety of settings from supported housing to alternative schooling.
I do not have Qualified Teacher Status. My focus is always on supporting students to find their own way of learning and feel confident in exploring their interests.
This includes self-directed learning, project-based learning, as well and alternative learning methods for those who struggle with mainstream learning environments.
I have an up to date DBS and first aid course.
Testimonials
“Our son has been having weekly sessions with Martin – he clicked with him straight away, as they are on the same wave length in so many respects. Martin has such a calm and open nature which our son needs as he is both neurodivergent and has an incurable medical condition.
“Martin provides him with that safe space so that he feels able to talk freely and voice his thoughts and opinions. Their discussions are both on an intellectual level, as well as well on a more relaxed level – chatting about shared interests like Marvel movies!
“Martin not only acts as a tutor, but as a learning advisor and mentor – which is exactly what we had hoped for and more!
Our son does not attend mainstream school, so it is vital he has someone who can fulfil the role of tutor, as well as to provide guidance and advice – which Martin does brilliantly. Our son cannot wait for the sessions each week.”
– Mr and Mrs Gulmez
“Martin has been a real hero. Our son didn’t thrive in mainstream education and had much of his previous love of history and politics quashed by the inflexible curriculum and impersonal teaching in school. Martin has helped him rekindle a love of learning and is making history fun again!”
– Ms Hickman
